July 2026 Cycle

Announcements

  • 20 Aug 2026 The July 2026 M.Tech. admission cycle is complete. The next round of MTech admissions is expected to be for the 3-year RA (research assistantship) program for the semester beginning in January 2027. The application portal might open in Oct or Nov 2026.

Programme

Overview

The Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad offers a Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programme in various modes to cater to different academic and professional needs:

  • 2-Year M.Tech. TA

A limited number of Teaching Assistant positions sponsored by the Ministry of Education are available. All TAs assist course instructors for the prescribed hours per week. Requires a valid GATE score. Selected candidates receive a monthly stipend for two years, subject to institute norms.

  • 3-Year M.Tech. RA

Limited Research Assistant positions are available through sponsored research projects. RAs assist the Principal Investigator and carry out their M.Tech. thesis within the same project. Stipend is provided from the sponsored project for three years. Two rounds of admission — August and January.

  • 2-Year M.Tech. Self-Sponsored

A flexible pathway for professionals and graduates to pursue advanced technical education without requiring a GATE qualification. Offers the same rigorous curriculum, research facilities, and faculty mentorship as the regular M.Tech. GATE qualification is not mandatory; no fellowship is provided.

Specialisations

M.Tech Streams

The department offers the M.Tech. programme with four specialised streams, each providing advanced knowledge and practical skills in cutting-edge areas of electrical engineering.

  • Communications, Signal Processing and Learning (CSPL)

  • Microelectronics and VLSI Design

  • Power Electronics and Power Systems (PEPS)

  • Systems and Control (SysCon)

Admission Process

M.Tech: TA (2-Year)

Admissions are conducted through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP).

Admission Process

M.Tech: RA (3-Year)

The M.Tech. (RA) programme has a greater research component than the two-year programme. The curriculum is identical to the 2-year M.Tech., distributed over 3 years to give greater emphasis on research, with two rounds of admission — August and January. The RA programme is tied to a sponsored research project in the department; candidates are encouraged to reach out to faculty members whose research interests align with their own prior to applying. Research Assistantship stipend is provided from the sponsored project for the duration of three years, subject to satisfactory progress and institute norms.

Eligibility requires a valid GATE score, at least 2 years of industry/academia experience, and a minimum of 6 months of prior IIT Hyderabad experience. For the July 2026 cycle, the RA mode is open for the CSPL, MVLSI and PEPS streams.

Admission Process

M.Tech: Self-Sponsored (2-Year)

The Self-Sponsored M.Tech. programme offers the same rigorous curriculum, research facilities, and faculty mentorship as the regular M.Tech. (TA), without requiring GATE qualification. It is designed for working professionals and recent graduates seeking advanced technical education. Fee is roughly INR 20,000 per credit; for a typical programme of 48–52 credits, the total cost is approximately INR 10 lakh. Self-Sponsored students are not entitled to any fellowship.

Minimum eligibility is a CGPA of 7 or above, with the following stream-wise academic background:

  • CSPL

    BTech from EE/EC/MC/ES/EP/CS/AI or equivalent.

  • MVLSI

  • PEPS

BE/BTech in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

  • SysCon

    BE/BTech in EE/EI or equivalent.
