  • A student joining for the PhD program with an M.Tech degree should complete alteast 12 credits of course work.
  • Direct PhD students (joining after B.Tech) should complete all the courses specified in the MTech Program of the particular stream.

Doctor of Philosophy Program - Guidelines

The guidelines to be followed by the Ph.D candidates in the Electrical Engineering department of IIT Hyderabad are as follows:
  • A guide will be allotted in the beginning/end of the first semester based on the choices given by the student.
  • A Doctoral Committee (DC) will be formed within one month of assigning a supervisor. This committee will preriodic meetings to assess the progress of the research. The DC consists of a Chairperson, the supervisor, and two members (one from within the department and one from outside).
  • An annual Doctoral Committee (DC) meeting will be scheduled for PhD students during the first three years. Afterward, meetings will occur every six months until the fifth year. Beyond the fifth year, DC meetings will be held every three months. If an extension is needed, it must be requested during each of these meetings, allowing for an additional three months if approved.
  • Ph.D. students are required to complete thier coursework with a minimum CGPA of 7.0 within their first year of admission. Depending on the candidate's background, the Doctoral Committee (DC) may advise additional courses. The DC may also suggest elective courses for the student to take.
  • Upon completing at least 75% of the course credits, students become eligible to take the comprehensive examination. However, they must attempt the examination within 12 months of starting their program. Additionally, students must attain a minimum CGPA of 7.0 in their coursework to qualify for the comprehensive exam.
  • If a student does not pass the comprehensive examination on the first attempt, they can reattempt it after a minimum of one month and up to a maximum of three months from the initial attempt. If unsuccessful on the second attempt, the student may either opt to fulfill the requirements for a Master's degree as an exit option or choose to leave the institute.
  • The student must successfully defend thier research proposal within three months of finishing the comprehensive examination. Regular and direct Ph.D. students are required to complete their RPS within 18 months of enrollment. This seminar is open to the entire institute.
  • The research should be conducted under the supervision of a faculty member from IIT Hyderabad and presented as a thesis.
  • A minimum of 2 scopus indexed publications (with atleast 1 journal) is necessary to submit the thesis.
